Southern Östergötland

Starting in the capital of Östergötland, Linköping, the southern parts of our county offers an abundance of experiences for the nature lovers, the history geeks, the adventurous and those more prone to stroll around and enjoying a more urban environment.

Linköping is a university city, resting on historical ground, that offers great shopping along with restau-rants, cafés and bars. Linköping is also home to two of the best museums in Sweden (according to the users of TripAdvisor). At Flygvapenmuseum, the Swedish air force museum, is a unique collection of military airplanes – along with activities, exhibitions, interactive experiences and much more for all ages.

Gamla Linköoing (Old Linköping) is an open air museum, where you can experience life a hundred years ago, or more. This is a unique place, with wooden houses, cobblestone streets, historical gardens and mu-seums – along with shops, cafés and restaurants as well as hotels. Gamla Linköping is open all year around, but it becomes even more alive at the end of June to the middle of August with lots of activities and experiences going on.

The southern parts of Östergötland is also a great place to go for anyone in love with nature. Lake Sommen, with the island Torpön, is a golden nugget here – where you can visit Naturum Sommen, go boating on the lake and, of course, bathe. This is also one of the starting points for a trip along Kinda Kanal – and the roads in this part of our county are great for anyone journeying on bike or motorcycle.

Astrid Lindgrens Värld (the world of Astrid Lingren) is also just nearby, where you get to meet the different characters from Astrid Lindgren’s books – and her childhood home at Näs is just a stone’s throw away.
