Southern Östergötland

Begin Your journey in Linköping and head south and You will find a paradise for nature lovers, offering unmissable natural surroundings and phenomena.

Linköping is the main town in the province of Östergötland and a vibrant city with great shopping and a buzzing nightlife. It also boasts two of Sweden’s finest museums source: TripAdvisor users): the Swedish Air Force Museum and Gamla Linköping Open Air Museum.

The Air Force Museum combines knowledge with fun activities. Try out your flying skills in the flight simulator or discover what it’s like in the eye of a storm. In addition to the unique collection of  aircraft, don’t miss the exhibition about the Swedish DC-3 that was shot down in the 1950s, salvaged 50 years later and finally housed in the basement of the museum.
With a range of exhibitions and activities, a shop and a restaurant, the museum has something for everyone of all ages.

Travel through time at Gamla Linköping Open Air Museum and find out what life was like a hundred years ago! Explore a unique environment with timber houses, cobbled streets, historic gardens and museums. There are also shops, restaurants, cafés and guest accommodation here.

The museum is open all year round with events and activities, but really comes to life during the event “Tidernas sommar”, from late July to mid-August, offering a wealth of fun activities for the whole family.

A jewel in southern Östergötland is lake Sommen with Torpön island. Drop by the visitor centre Naturum Sommen, ride a boat on the lake, swim in the clear water or sunbathe on a secluded island. Torpön is especially popular with cyclists and walkers.

Just a stone’s throw away is Astrid Lindgren's World, where visitors can meet beloved characters from Astrid Lindgren’s children’s books and visit the author’s well-preserved childhood home on Näs farm.

The area has a rich array of small-scale, unique businesses, making for a fascinating trip through the beautiful landscape near the Småland border. Just watch out for the Sommarkoa, a mythical cow that, according to ancient legend, lies resting in one of the mountains around lake Sommen…
