Viby Church

Mantorp, Mjölby

 

On the site, there have been a wooden church probably built in the 1000's. Remnants of this was found when the floor was uncovered at a restoration. Danes is said to burnt the church in 1566, but it was repaired a few years later. After a lightning strike in 1757 the church was rebuilt in the years 1776-77, but the tower and the eastern and southern walls were preserved.

Pehr Hörbergs magnificent altarpiece from 1796 adorns the Gustavian interior.
In the churchyard are two rune stones.
In the surrounding area there are several burial grounds from the Iron Age and a number of rune stones.
