The town centre still follows its medieval plan and many of the historic buildings are very well maintained. Two people are responsible for the famous skyline: King Gustav Vasa, who built the Vadstena Castle, recognized as the best preserved Renaissance castle in Scandinavia, and St. Birgitta, responsible for the construction of the monastery area.Vadstena's standing over the centuries as a cultural and commercial centre is due to their influence. Vadstena's strong handicraft tradiuon, dating from the Middle Ages, still lives, locally producing glass crafts and handmade lace. Should you feel hungry, fresh fish or crayfish caught in lake Vättern are there to be enjoyed. The lush nature of Vadstena and its surroundings is unique, offering magnificent parks and green areas. Here too can be found two large lakes hosting amazing wildlife, long sandy beaches, and the characteristic closter lilies.
